CHARACTER INFO
Character: Nanaki (AKA Red XIII)
Canon: Final Fantasy VII Original Continuity, Post Advent Children
Age: 50 (equivalent to a teenager in human years)
Background Information: Red XIII’s Wiki page
NOTE: Nanaki is going to be from the original continuity, but some details about his backstory and personality might be taken from the Remake continuity if they help to flesh out details that were lacking or glossed over in the original.
Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Confusion and wariness is one of the first things common for those who would first see Nanaki. After all, he's a big cat (Dog? Wolf? Lab-rat?), an animal a beast... who would expect human-like intelligence from him, let alone be able to speak? Even Cloud and the others were confused as to his appearance, and shocked to discover he could talk. Once the shock of his intelligence wears off, what people first come to see from Nanaki is a polite, calm, and mature manner of speaking. He has a strong sense of honour and a warrior's pride, and is also rather intelligent and knows a lot about both the Planet and the natural world, both from his education from Bugenhagen and from his own personal travels. He also doesn't initially seem as interested in certain "two-leg" conventions; he's even okay with the party calling him "Red XIII" before they learn his true name in Cosmo Canyon. However, as people get to know him, more facets of Nanaki's personality becomes apparent. He is a rather curious soul, and as he opens up to those he gets to know he sometimes begins to lose his more "mature" manner of speaking, letting out more childish comments or mannerisms bore akin to a teenager (this isn't as apparent in the English translations, but in the Japanese dialogue his speech patterns start off more polite/mature for one his "age", and then later on become more relaxed as he addresses himself with monickers more befitting of a young man than an adult).
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Initially, one of the biggest things driving Nanaki was a desire to be better than his father. He initially believed that his father, Seto, had abandoned Cosmo Canyon and considered him a coward. As such, Nanaki pushed himself to be the warrior he considered his father wasn't, wanting to prove himself better and stronger than Seto. Also, initially, he only wanted to accompany Cloud and the others only until Cosmo Canyon, as he believed his duty lay with protecting Cosmo Canyon. Being a warrior meant sticking to your duty, after all, and he didn't want to abandon his duties to Cosmo Canyon like his father apparently had.
Throughout his travels with Cloud and the others, Nanaki learns of Sephiroth and the threat to the Planet. After he discovers the truth of what happened to Seto, Nanaki's motivations shift from spite to admiration, instead wanting to be a warrior just like his father. It's also thanks to Bugenhagen's motivation, pushing Nanaki to see more of the world and learn all he can, that further pushes his goals. Bugenhagen raised Nanaki and Nanaki respected him greatly, and as such it's thanks to the wise old man that Nanaki grew up as he was today. Bugenhagen also hid the true nature of Seto's death from Nanaki so that he could realize what happened on his own, and make his own decisions rather than simply following what Nanaki believed was expected of him. It's this conversation that Nanaki takes it upon himself to assist with saving the Planet, agreeing to go with Cloud and the others and admitting that he wants to protect the planet as well.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
One of Nanaki's biggest regrets involves his attitude towards his father, Seto. When Nanaki was born, Seto had apparently run off during an invasion of the Gi tribe upon Cosmo Canyon. Nanaki spent almost his whole life reprimanding his father, calling him a coward for fleeing, and holding him in general disdain. However, after Nanaki returns to Cosmo Canyon after being captured by Shinra, Bugenhagen leads Nanaki and the others through the caves behind Cosmo Canyon and reveals the truth to Nanaki: Seto escaped into the tunnels not to flee, but to hold off a secondary invasion force from invading from behind. Nanaki learned that his father didn't die a coward's death, but rather sacrificed his life to protect Cosmo Canyon. This realization was a shock to Nanaki, and was a big cause in helping shape his resolve to assist Cloud and the others in fighting Sephiroth and saving the planet. Now that he knew that his father was not a coward, he longed to follow in the footsteps of his father, who he now regards as a hero.
Another point of contention in Nanaki is his feral nature. He is a beast, indeed, but he also has human-like intelligence. This puts him in a weird position, not being human and yet not fully animal. This duality troubled him for some time, and in the novel On The Way To A Smile, he talks about how this duality made him feel lonely and isolated, and even named that hollow spot in his heart "Gilligan" to give it form. He also laments in the story over how his species' longevity will one day mean he outlives his friends, a thought that doesn't sit well in his mind. After all, who would feel comfortable outliving their friends by several hundred years? It's only thanks to talking to Vincent, who is immortal and will live even longer than Nanaki himself, that he's able to come to terms with these facets of himself, and make him realize that all these elements are what make Nanaki who he is.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Somehow, Nanaki is able to convincingly pass as a Shinra soldier, though he does look a little silly when doing so.
Abilities:
- Natural Abilities - being a large feline beast, Nanaki has advantages that humans do not. Most notably: the physical strength of a big cat, the ability to eat raw meat, run long distances, and the ability to cause impressive damage with his claws and teeth
- Extended Lifespan - Nanaki's species is stated to be incredibly long-lived, capable of living over 500 years old. Nanaki is technically the second-oldest party member, but he is said to be the equivalent of a teenager in human years
- Magic Usage - Nanaki is able to cast magic with the use of Materia, which grant the user various spells based on what Materia is equipped
- Limit Breaks - these vary from user to user, but they are "ultimate" moves a user can do. Nanaki will have two available to him: Earth Rave and Cosmo Memory
Inventory:
- His usual bracelets, bangles, and adornments
- Limited Moon Headdress
- Materia - Fira, All (basically lets him cast a spell on multiple targets rather than just one), Elemental, Cura, Sense
- Teeth and claws

ARMADA SELECTION
Nanaki will be aligning with the Paladins for his time in Escordvi. While as a wild animal he might vibe with the free-spirited nature of the Corsairs, because of his strong sense of honour and courage he would honestly fit in better with the Paladins. Though he might still be tempted to do things his own way since he's not afraid to take things a little more ferally if the situation calls for it, he does abide by the rules and looks out for the greater good overall.
